Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise front of vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod and count or measure the number of exposed threads on the old outer tie rod end to preserve alignment.
- Remove cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or retaining nut on the outer tie rod end.
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or pickle fork; avoid damaging the knuckle.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod, noting the thread count or using the measurement taken to match alignment position.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the recorded position, then tighten the jam nut against it.
- Install the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle, torque the retaining nut to factory specification, and install a new cotter pin if required.
- If the tie rod end is greaseable, apply grease via the grease fitting until joint is lubricated; sealed joints require no greasing.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque the lug nuts to specification, and perform a preliminary steering check. Have a professional alignment performed after installation.
