1948-1956 Ford Truck / 1949-1956 Ford Car Rear Axle Pinion Seal is a direct-fit replacement designed to stop gear oil leaks at the pinion yoke, protect bearings, and keep contaminants out of the differential. Built from a high-quality elastomer sealing lip and a corrosion-resistant metal case, this seal delivers long-lasting durability and consistent performance under road and load conditions. Ideal for restorations and routine maintenance, it restores axle reliability with OEM-style dimensions for straightforward installation and dependable service life.
Features:
  • Fits 1948-1956 Ford trucks and 1949-1956 Ford cars (rear axle pinion application).
  • High-quality elastomer sealing lip with a corrosion-resistant steel case for extended life.
  • Prevents gear oil leaks, protects pinion bearings, and keeps contaminants out of the differential.
  • Direct-fit replacement engineered to OEM dimensions for easy, reliable installation.
  • Durable construction suited for restoration projects and routine axle maintenance.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 60-120 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Wrenches
  • Torque wrench
  • Seal driver or appropriately sized socket
  • Pry bar or seal puller
  • Drain pan
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner or solvent
  • Gear oil for refill
  • Gasket scraper (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake and chock the front wheels for safety.
  2. Raise the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack and securely support it on jack stands placed under the axle or frame. Never rely on the jack alone.
  3. Mark the driveshaft and pinion yoke orientation so the driveline is reassembled in the same position to avoid driveline vibration.
  4. Place a drain pan under the differential and remove the driveshaft from the pinion yoke; if needed, loosen the pinion nut and remove the yoke to access the seal.
  5. Carefully pry or pull out the old pinion seal using a seal puller or small pry bar, taking care not to score or damage the housing bore.
  6. Clean the sealing surface and housing bore thoroughly with solvent and a clean rag; inspect the yoke, bearings and shaft for wear or damage and replace if necessary.
  7. Lightly coat the new seal’s inner lip with clean gear oil. Seat the new seal squarely into the housing using a seal driver or an appropriately sized socket, tapping evenly until the seal is flush with the housing.
  8. Reinstall the pinion yoke and torque the pinion nut to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified value (refer to the factory service manual). Reattach the driveshaft in the original orientation.
  9. Refill the differential to the proper level with the correct grade of gear oil, wipe away any spilled fluid, and check for leaks around the new seal.
  10. Lower the vehicle, road test at low speed, then recheck for leaks and proper driveline behavior. Re-torque fasteners if required after initial driving.
  11. Note: Always consult the factory service manual for vehicle-specific procedures, torque specifications, and safety precautions. If you are not comfortable performing this job, seek professional service.
